Another Fin De Semana...

Yo he comido muchos plátanos y mucho mole, pero no juntos.

PERRITOS!

-------------------

I did not do much Thursday morning.  In the afternoon, I saw a "Mayan" ceremony at the school.  It was interesting because the Mayas use lots of materials and plants that I recognize from ceremonies from American Indians in the states.  There are many similarities.

At night I wanted to listen to live music.  I frequently hear about El Cuartito, a café that has lots of live music, interesting meetings, and organic, fair-trade coffee, tea, and chocolate.  I decided to find this place.  There was really good music with Frederick O'Neil Thomas, from the US, and the local band, Ciudad Luna

There weren't a lot of seats, so I had to sit at a table with strangers.  When I spoke with these strangers, I discovered that three of them currently attend Oberlin.  The other man is from Xela, but he asked me where I'm from.  When I said, "Lawrence, MA," he said "Ah!  Hay muchos Dominicanos y Puertorriqueños allí!"  Apparently he has friends who live in Lawrence!

After the concert, I talked with the musicians for a bit.  It was a fun night.

Friday I ate plantains with mole.  I have eaten a lot of plantains and a lot of mole, but not together.  In my opinion, the mole (from La Laguna Azul) was too sweet--especially with the sweet plantains.  But it's an interesting idea.  I had my last class with Salvador.  I want to try a new teacher and a new experience.  I will also change to morning classes this week.

Saturday, the boys (from my house) went to Panajachel.  I rested and brought my clothes to the laundry place in the morning.  After lunch, I decided I needed to do something.  I decided to find the zoo and see the animals.  It was an adventure!  There was a rainstorm, and I hid in Pais (shopping center) until it passed.  The animals were cute, but sad.  Like the animals in Takalik Abaj, they were in really small cages!  There was a very depressed lion.  I want to free him!

After the zoo, I wanted to investigate Walmart.  I was curious.  The Xela Walmart is big and evil just like those in the US, but with a guatemalan bakery and big bins of rice and beans.  I resisted the urge to buy familiar things.

Walmart is in a big mall.  It's very similar to the malls in the US.  Kinda sad.  I bought a much bigger memory card for my camera.  Now I don't have to upload all of my photos all the time.

Saturday night I went back to El Cuartito.  I met a German man who is in Xela alone, like me.  He has been here for 12 weeks!  I drank Guatemalan kombucha--which is just like regular kombucha, but a paper says that it is "the tea of immortality, miraculous cider, medicine of the gods, and blah, blah, blah ;)"  It was good kombucha!

Sunday I was excited because I wanted to try food from restaurants.  I ate breakfast at La Cafetera.net.  For Q30 (about $4) I got an omelet, bread, beans, plantains, cheese, coffee, and orange juice.  A great price!  The food was good--nothing special, but I was happy with it.  I ate lunch in a Pollo Campero.  It's a big fast food chain, but I had to try it because there's a new location in Lawrence, and I want to compare them.  I was surprised because it is a restaurant where you can sit and there are waiters.  The food is good for fast food too!

The winner for food is, without a doubt, El Cuartito!  I went to El Cuartito for the third time in three days because I heard that "DJ Kokopelli" would be there.  (My Kokopelli.)  I had breakfast at night:  an omelet very superior to the one from La Cafetera.net with lots of veggies and pesto.  There were also cute, tiny pitchers of salt, pepper, and cayenne (? or something spicy).  I also liked DJ Kokopelli.

When I wasn't eating, I was walking.  I went back to the mall to find a pair of jeans in my size.  It is not possible.  :-(  I am gigantic!  I was sad until I saw a pickup truck full of puppies!  PUPPIES!  And I played with them!  :-D  When I was walking from the mall back to my house, I ran into my new friend, Henry, from Ciudad Luna.  Evidently Xela is a small place!

  1. You are doing a very fine job of reconnoitering!
Perhaps you will need to find someone to make a pair of pants for you, you gigantic Gringa you. You are about a foot taller than the average Mayan.
